There are 5 simple ways a small business can increase their staff productivity. All without the need for expensive and time consuming “Team Building Workshops” or having to recruit more staff to ‘share the load’.
Take regular breaks
A short break can be as little as 10min and it helps to refresh your mind and clear your thoughts.
Put a reminder on your electronic calendar to remind to take your break or organise to see a client at a local café.
Introduce music into the office
Have music playing on the radio/CD Player in the office. Choose an “easy listening’ channel or have ‘relaxation’ or ‘classical’ music playing. “Classical” music is great for stimulating the brain, whilst ‘relaxation’ music helps to decrease stress.
Eat Nutritious Food
Try having a fruit box delivered weekly, which will provide health snacks for you and your staff.
If you have a designated lunch room provide health snacks like yoghurt, nuts and dried fruit that staff can snack on throughout the day.
Providing nutritious food will keep you and your staff well fuelled and improve their energy levels, which in turn increases productivity.
Encourage Exercise &/or Physical Activity
Exercise (incidental or structured) helps decrease stress by reducing cortisol (a stress hormone) and increase the good happy chemicals endorphins, which are responsible for making you feel happy. When you feel happy and less stressed, you are more productive!
Encourage your staff and yourself to exercise at least 3 times a week. You can do this by having your staff wear pedometers and see who can record the most steps each week and make a competition of it, and offer a prize (e.g. movie tickets, dinner).
Have a fitness professional come to the workplace to conduct fitness classes or personal training.
Encouraging your staff to take part in some form of exercise is also good for building team morale.
Have Fun!
This is the most important of all.
Organise a social event every so often. Try a BBQ or picnic. Ask your staff to bring along their partner and/or kids to some events and make it more family orientated.
Plan a roster of ‘social events’ where everyone in the office can choose something to do each month (e.g. ten pin bowling, rock climbing, bush walking, bear foot bowls). If everyone gets to suggest ideas, this will make the planning of this fun too!
